Teacher burnout

If you’re left feeling burnt out by the end of each term, you’re not the only one.

The good news is, there’s a way to prevent it happening and create the long-term balance you so desperately need.

Teaching is an extreme sport, it’s certainly not for the faint hearted. We do it because we love it, it’s our passion and the intrinsic rewards of watching a child delight in their learning and discovery makes it all worth it. But it’s also A LOT.

Did you know that more than 50% of new teachers leave within the first five years on the job?

If that doesn’t show you how much strength and resilience it takes to teach, I don’t know what will.

Teaching is one of the top five professions most likely to experience burnout. Most people think that stress is what causes burnout, but in actual fact, it’s the combination of stress and inadequate support and coping resources that causes it.

Burnout can cause a crisis in a person’s sense of professional competency. It can destroy your sense of worth, your ambition and cause you to want to abandon your career instead of seeking help and support.

It affects the body and the brain.

  • - Feeling drained, exhausted, depleted

    - Dreading work, feeling less engaged and unfulfilled

    - Trouble sleeping

    - Depression / anxiety

    - Feeling like you’re drowning

  • - Irritable, frustrated and emotionally exhausted

    - No time for a social life or anything non-work related

    - Low sense of accomplishment

    - Aches and pains / headaches / muscle tension

Hey, I'm Aimee...

Teaching is my calling.

The thing I love about teaching, is teaching

I love helping my kids learn how to solve a problem. I love showing my kids the world and watching them explore the past, present and future. Mostly, I love the relationships I create.

They become ‘my kids’ the moment they walk through my classroom door. It has always been the kids that kept me in the classroom, even though they have challenged me more than I ever expected. So much of who I am and what I have learned about myself is because of them.

But here’s the thing, I was once a teacher who faced burnout regularly – I mean at least once a term.

I had pushed my needs so far down the list and I worked myself to the point of exhaustion and overwhelm. I thought that’s what I had to do in order to be the best teacher I could be. The reality is, I was doing myself and everyone around me a disservice and hitting breaking point over and over again was making me miserable to the point I questioned if I could carry on my teaching career.

I am not that person anymore, and now I am using my journey to help others. Helping others achieve the balance they so desperately crave and find joy in their work again is truly something that lights my fire.

I didn’t set out to write a book, but my book is the result of using writing as a therapeutic outlet. I am so proud this raw and vulnerable account of my life is helping others.

"I've started reading your book, only 30-odd pages so far, but I had to come back to you and say THANK YOU. I've already cried numerous times, I have laughed and you made me think. Thank you for your honesty, vulnerability, wisdom and courage. You are amazing!
